The Ultimate Salary Calculator Guide: How Does Gross Pay Become Net Pay?
Have you ever found yourself uncertain when hearing a gross salary in a job offer, trying to estimate how much will actually land in your bank account? Or, as an employer, would you like to see exactly how much a given gross salary costs your company in total? The uncertainty ends here!
This salary calculator was created to give you a crystal-clear picture of the Hungarian payroll landscape. With its help, you can accurately calculate your net, take-home pay from your gross salary in seconds, according to the current rules for 2025. This guide, in turn, helps you not only see the numbers but also understand what lies behind them.
The Basics: Gross, Net, and Total Cost
Before we dive into using the calculator, let's clarify the three most important terms:
- Gross Salary: This is the amount stated in your employment contract. The gross salary is the starting point, from which various taxes and contributions are deducted. You can think of it as the „face value” of your pay—the full compensation for your work before deductions.
- Net Salary: This is your „take-home pay.” The amount your employer actually transfers to your bank account after deductions. The net salary is what you have to manage with at the end of the month. The formula is simple: Net Salary = Gross Salary – Deductions.
- Total Employer Cost: This is the amount you, as an employee, actually „cost” the company. In addition to the gross salary, the employer must also pay additional taxes (currently the 13% social contribution tax, SZOCHO). Knowing this helps you understand the background of salary negotiations and how the labor market works.
Deductions in Detail: Why Is the Net Lower?
The difference between gross and net salary comes from legally mandated public charges. As an employee, two main items are deducted from your gross salary:
- Personal Income Tax (PIT): Its rate is uniformly 15%. This tax contributes to funding state tasks, such as education, healthcare, or public safety.
- Social Security Contribution (SS Contribution): Its rate is 18,5%. This is a combined contribution that covers pension and health insurance, as well as labor market benefits. So, this funds your future pension, your medical care, and provides a safety net in case of unemployment.
Together, these two items account for 51% of the gross salary. The good news is that in various life situations, tax allowances can be claimed, which reduce the tax payable and thus increase your net salary. Our calculator takes these allowances into account as well.
Using the Calculator Step by Step
Our calculator is designed to be simple and intuitive to use. Follow the steps below for accurate results.
Step 1: Enter Your Gross Salary In the top field, enter your monthly gross salary in numbers. Do not use periods, commas, or the „Ft” suffix (e.g.,. 650000). As soon as you start typing, the calculator immediately begins the calculation.
Step 2: Check the Allowances Applicable to You This is the most important part, where you can personalize the calculation.
- PIT exemption for those under 25: If you have not yet turned 25, check this box. According to the law, young people under 25 do not have to pay personal income tax up to the national average wage (which in 2025 corresponds to a gross salary of around 666,000 HUF per month). The calculator handles this limit automatically.
- Personal Tax Allowance: You can claim this allowance if you are listed in the government decree on illnesses considered severe disabilities (e.g., diabetes, lactose or gluten intolerance, certain cancers). The allowance reduces the tax base, which in 2025 means a monthly 11,595 HUF tax saving.
- Allowance for Newlyweds: If this is the first marriage for at least one of you or your spouse, you are entitled to the allowance for 24 months starting from the month following the wedding. This reduces the PIT payable by 5,000 HUFper month. It's important that the couple must decide which of them claims it.
- Family Tax and Contribution Allowance: This is the most complex but also the most significant allowance in terms of savings. You need to provide two pieces of data:
- Number of dependents: Here, enter the number of all children who count for family allowance purposes (even if they no longer receive the allowance, e.g., a university student). This number determines the amount of the allowance (the more children, the higher the allowance per person).
- Of which, eligible dependents: Here, enter the number of children for whom you actually wish to claim the allowance.
- How does it work? The allowance reduces the PIT base. If your PIT drops to zero and the allowance cap is still not exhausted, the remaining amount can also be deducted from the 18.5% SS contribution. This is a huge help for families raising children.
Interpreting the Results
After entering your settings, you can immediately see the final result in the results field on the right:
